Occupational Therapy (OT) CEU Requirements

OT continuing education requirements generally mirror PT requirements in total hours but may have different topic mandates. Most states require 20–30 hours per biennial renewal cycle. Key differences from PT requirements include:

Some states have specific OT-focused topic mandates, such as supervision of OTAs, domain of OT practice, or state-specific practice act training. AOTA-approved courses are widely accepted across states, making them a safe choice for multi-state travelers.

OT requirements typically range from 20 to 36 hours per renewal cycle. States like New York (36 hrs/3 years), California (24 hrs/2 years), and Kansas (32 hrs/2 years) have among the highest requirements. Always verify specific OT requirements with your state occupational therapy board.

Speech-Language Pathology (SLP) CEU Requirements

SLP continuing education often follows ASHA's framework, though state requirements may differ from ASHA certification maintenance. ASHA requires 30 CEU hours (3.0 ASHA CEUs) per 3-year certification maintenance interval. Many states align with this but add their own mandates.

Common SLP-specific requirements include topics like audiology awareness, dysphagia management, and supervision of SLPAs. ASHA-approved courses satisfy requirements in most states, but some states require specific state-approved providers or additional jurisprudence courses.

If you maintain both your ASHA CCC and state licensure, courses that satisfy ASHA requirements will usually cover state requirements as well — but always verify with each state's speech-language pathology board.

Tips for Multi-State Travelers

The most efficient approach is to identify your strictest state (the one with the most hours and most specific topic mandates) and plan your courses to satisfy that state first. Everything else usually cascades. Keep a spreadsheet tracking each state's requirements, your renewal dates, and which courses count toward which states. Use APTA, AOTA, or ASHA-approved providers to ensure the widest acceptance across state lines. And always keep your completion certificates — some states audit, and you'll need proof dating back several years.
